THE media industry in Nigeria lost another member to gruesome murder on Sunday as Bayo Ohu of The Guardian newspaper was in the early hours of the day murdered by unknown gunmen at his Akowonjo, Lagos State home.
The late journalist was until his death the assistant news editor cum head of the political desk of The Guardian.
Ohu’s death occurred at a time the killers of Abayomi Ogundeji of Thisday newspapers are yet to be unmasked. Ogundeji was also murdered around the place where Ohu was killed.
The Nigerian Tribune gathered that Ohu was shot dead by a six-man gang that invaded his 9 Oyeniji Street, Odukoya Estate, Akowonjo residence at around seven o’clock on Sunday morning.
It was said that the gang drove to his house in a white Toyota Camry and ensured that he was dead before leaving his house and taking just his computer laptop.
The Nigerian Tribune was informed by a source that the late reporter was at home with his four children when the gunmen invaded his house.
The late journalist was reportedly shot when he responded to a knock on his door. The gang, after shooting the journalist, forced its way into the building and ensured that that he was dead before leaving the house.
Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Frank Mba, visited the late journalist’s home on Sunday and stated that the police had begun investigations into the murder.
When the Nigerian Tribune visited the late reporter’s home on Sunday, it learnt that the late reporter’s wife, Blessing, had gone to church when the armed men invaded her home and killed her husband.
Reacting to the incident, the editor of The Guardian newspaper, Mr. Debo Adeshina, said the death of Ohu was shocking and devastating.
He explained that when he was phoned in the morning that Ohu had been shot, he quickly rushed there, and he never knew his condition was so critical until he got there, and that he was rushed from one hospital to the other, until his situation went beyond control, and his corpse was finally dropped at the morgue.
Recalling his last moment with Ohu, Adeshina said he saw Ohu last on Thursday, along with other reporters, and he was full of life, and he never had any inkling that that would be the last moment he would see him.
He described the late Ohu as a good reporter, whose industry would be missed.
Members of the family of the late reporter were shocked and devastated over the development and none of them was able to pass a comment on the sad incident when journalists visited his residence.
