Tinubu tasks Nigerian leaders

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos State, has called for love and compassion among Nigerians, saying the spirit of Ramadan deserves no less.

The former governor, in his Eid-el-Fitri message to Nigerians, said Ramadan was unique, since it was a leveller; and the closest demonstration in Islam to a universal and egalitarian human family.
“Even if you were rich, fasting at Ramadan made you feel the pangs of hunger – which the poor have to contend with almost every day of their lives.”

“That would make you to give thanks to Allah for the little mercies He has shown you,” he said.
He said now that Nigerians were fresh from that spiritually purifying exercise, it was time to internalise its lessons to make Nigeria a better place.

“Nigerian leaders must seize the Sallah to devote themselves anew to the welfare of our people,” Asiwaju Tinubu admonished. “It is time for our leaders to show compassion and put our people first in whatever they do.”

He however said Nigerian leaders would be more compelled to do the people’s bidding if elections were free and fair, thus representing the true will of the people.
“That is why,” he insisted, “electoral reforms were imperative to give our democracy a new lease of life. We must insist on reforms of the electoral processes for the Nigerian people to become the real masters in the political environment.”

To this end, he called on mass support for the Coalition of Democrats for Electoral Reforms (CODER), adding that other stakeholders and Nigerian patriots should join the lobby for sane elections to ensure democracy, justice, peace and prosperity for Nigeria.
